Last week the Reserve Bank of New Zealand(RBN) raised its interest rates from 0.75% to 1.00%. In the official bank statement, the RBN stressed the need for further interest rate increases and declared that by the end of 2022, the interest rates would reach 2.20%. That means that on pretty much every meeting by the end of 2022, the Reserve Bank of New Zealand will be raising its official cash rate.
The Reserve Bank of Australia monetary statement is due on the first of March 2022. Although no interest rate hike is expected, the market participants will watch for any change in the bank monetary statement. The past three inflation reports came out hot and above the Reserve Bank of Australia inflation target range. Will that be enough for the policymakers to start preparing the markets for changes in the bank monetary policy?
Next week, on the second of March 2022, the Bank of Canada is expected to raise its interest rates from 0.25% to 0.50%. The markets are waiting for more details on the Bank’s plans for the number of interest rate increases by the end of 2022.
The most important event for the week ahead is the Fed chairman Powell’s testimony in front of congress. Is the chairman going to provide any details that may hint at the size of the interest rate hike on March 17, 2022?
In the past week, life in Europe changed for one night after Russia entered Ukraine, starting a war. The decision of the dictator Putin to attack a peaceful country is a crime. The event cost significant volatility in the financial markets. The volatility in the financial markets will continue in the weeks ahead, and eventually, if not already it will affect the day to day life around the world.
