In the latest FOMC Statement and during the press conference, Chairman Powell and FOMC members signaled determination for an interest rate hike in March 2022. That was something that the markets were expecting and priced in. The surprise for the markets came from the fact that Chairman Powel didn’t rule out another rate hike in the meeting on May 2022.
The Bank of Canada also signaled an interest rate hike in its next meeting on 2nd March 2022. The expectations are that the BoC will increase the overnight rate from 0.25% to 0.50%.
In the coming week, all eyes are on the Bank Of England. The expectations are that the BoE will increase the interest rate again, from 0.25% to 0.50%.
The markets are also waiting on the latest monetary statement and press conference from the ECB in the coming week. In their previous decision, the ECB announced the end of the asset purchases under the PEPP in March 2022. However, the ECB stated that the economy still needs monetary support and hinted at the possibility for an increase of asset purchases under the APP.
